The big earth

Antanybe, « the big earth » it’s the name that Madagascar uses the Islanders to name. Except by plane, to get there you have to go to the port, and either take the fast and overloaded shuttles called Teuf-Teuf, or take the ferry with or without vehicle or rather opt for fast hulls , to the landing stages Ankify or Antsanpany. You can then reach different cities or the North via the bus station of Ambanja. But also you will have the possibility of heading East towards Majunga, or in the center towards trays and Antananarivo capital.

North Madagascar

Ambanja

First important city after leaving Nosybe. The land surrounding it is still rich in colonial-type plantations such as cocoa, coffee, banana, vanilla, pepper, rice, sweet potato, tobacco, cassava for tapioka and ylang- ylang. Visits to the plantations or along the river Sambirano are proposed by Libertalia by mountain bike or by car.

Ambilobe

On the road to Diego, Ambilobe is famous for its sugar cane plantations but has experienced a rush to gold, sapphire and diamond when deposits were discovered a few years ago.

Les Tsingy de L’Ankarana

The Ankarana National Park is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Northern Madagascar. It derives its fame from its Tsingy, its rich biodiversity, and its ancestral traditions. Several million years ago, giant corals formed this limestone mass with fine, hard grains which, under the action of rain loaded with marine salts, will erode over time and give these pointed forms and sharpened, the karsts. This massif is pierced by hundreds of kilometers of galleries, caves and canyons, with cliffs more than 200 meters. In this fortress of stones and this tangle of vegetation, a unique fauna will flourish with a high rate of endemism, which will remain almost unknown until the twentieth century. In caves and rivers there are high concentrations of bats, shrimps and freshwater fish, but also Nile crocodiles. The diurnal and nocturnal lemurs inhabit the forests. The carnivorous fosa rub shoulders with reptiles such as uroplates, chameleons, brookesias, geckos that use mimicry to hide from their predators.

The Tsingy Red

A landscape of another planet at the gates of the reserve of Analamera. in the south-east of Diego. These Tsingy are very different from those of Ankarana because they come from an erosion also called "lapiez". This original geological formation linked to the combination of bush fires, erosion and infiltration of rainwater, offers a supernatural landscape of beauty. To observe preferably in the afternoon. The prints are different according to the variations of the light.

Diego-Suarez

Antsiranana also called Diego Suarez, is the largest city in northern Madagascar and the third largest port on the island. The town is located at Cape Amber (Tanjon'i Bobaomby) with the Mozambique Channel to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. It is sheltered by the bay of Diego-Suarez (156 km of coast). It is the second biggest bay in the world after that of Rio de Janeiro, it also has its sugar loaf called Nosy Lonjo. The city has lost its grandeur but still keeps a nostalgic charm. The marks of colonization haunt her like ghosts. The surroundings of Antsiranana are superb: entanglement of bays, fishing villages, the Amber Mountain and the Ankarana massif to the south.

Antsohihy

"Where there are Sohihy" (tree of the family Rubiaceae, formerly very widespread in the region and used mainly for shipbuilding). Antsohihy is a road and river communication center, forestry operations, businesses and transport-related activities. Collection of seafood (mangrove crabs, sea cucumbers, shrimps) from Analalava and Narinda Bay. Exploitation of chromite: Chromium is evacuated via the Loza, towards the Mozambique channel. It is a good half day's journey. Thanks to the more than 50 km inland route, the Loza can reach the town of Analalava, which is situated at its mouth, through numerous meanderings bordered by thick mangrove forests crossing the great lake and Sacred Sakalava sites.

Vohemar

The town of Vohemar, called Madagascar Iharana, is located in the Northeast, in the region called SAVA famous for its world-renowned vanilla crops. It is as the crow flies at equal distance from Diego Suarez and Nosy Be. The Pirates and Corsairs, including Surcouf, have frequented this magnificent bay, which is one of the rare natural harbors of the East Coast of the Big Island. Less rainy than the rest of the East Coast, the climate is healthy. In the days of the colonies, this city served as a place of recovery and convalescence.
